MapPoint Alternative?

I would like to be able to use the MapPoint Webservice to get maps of an
area (UK) while out and about, then display various icons on the map (any
number), based on longitude/lattitude data I have stored in a database.
However, having read various bits of data I am informed that that the cost
of MapPoint will amount to a minimum cost of $15,000 (which includes a
500,000 transaction charge), this is way way way way way over my budget,
does anyone know of any alternative. The mappoint option I believe includes
the whole of Europe, my requirements would be for the UK only, with a
maximum of 1000 transactions per month (at a guess).

Thanks,

Steven

One alternative that I can think of is www.Streetmap.co.uk who have a Pocket
Streetmap product and developer kit, however I understand this is currently
only available as an ActiveX control so not easy to incorporate into .NETCF.
I'm not sure if they also offer web services, their prices seem to be quite
affordable - may be worth checking out.
